I put beer in my "American" beef stew. I was out of red wine one cold February day, which is how I discovered that beer was an excellent alternative for a completely different flavor. One day, I didn't feel like making a salad, and tossed the spinach in the stew to cook instead. That was also amazingly different (and delicious). I serve beef stew with any kind of fresh bread or biscuit like buttermilk biscuits, cornbread, or really crusty sourdough french bread, and of course with beer. Shoshana

I think that it is, and has been, a national trend to ignore the door should one hear a knock or the bell between 10 a.m. and noon, when one is not expecting any visitors. I know I generally do. So do all my neighbors, too. Shoshana

I am a full time high school teacher, I go to law school at night (2L), I clerk for the public defender, I am two months away from formal conversion to Judaism, and the rest of the time I am studying, exercising, sleeping, and watching television. I have not been to a movie since last March. This better be worth it. Shoshana

TRIBUTE to a CIRCUIT OVERSEER
by Amazing inover the years, circuit servants and then circuit overseers came and went.
i can only recall a handfull because the rest were unimpressive or i was not real active during the visit of some.
most cos that i recall were humdrum with perhaps some single interesting feature or personality quirk.

I also grew up in Sonoma County and remember him and his wife. There was one elder in our congregation who thought like Snow. The rest were a bunch of turds. That whole thing about a potential elder whose wife was not a regular publisher could have happened in our congregation. PO's son's (elder also) wife never came to meetings but went out in service, so he was "off the hook" but woe to the hard-working guy whose wife just couldn't confront her shyness enough to bother people in their own homes and tell them they were doomed to destruction if they didn't listen to her. Snow came along and the congregation had a new elder. I remember that. While others rejoiced, it made me sad, because this new elder would turn out to be one of the turds. Shoshana

Trying not to 'contaminate' others
by SM62 indoes anyone else feel the same that they feel afraid when approached by a particular bro or sis, particularly one you like and who is really nice.
i feel that i may get them into trouble just for talking to me.
i don't want to drop them in it so i always keep the conversation short.

I found myself in the same situation from time to time, worrying whether, by virtue of my DA statuts, that others were putting themselves in jeopardy for their own "status" (or standing, as they call it). But as the years wore on, I realized I was still thinking in their mindset when it came to others' consciences (or brainwashing), such that while I was perfectly comfortable with the notion that I get to make my own decisions about with whom I wish to converse, and associate, I was still trying to protect others from doing that for themselves. Just a little hypocrisy on my part, I thought, so I backed off and let the conversations flow. Of course, sometimes they are jws that I really don't want to talk to, and I do end those conversations as quickly as I can without being rude or hostile (oh, wow, is that really the time? I've gotta run....).Shoshana

Have YOU Ever Met Up With Anyone Famous
by RAYZORBLADE inhave any of you on this forum, ever met up with anyone considered famous?
i've met a great deal of people over the years.
one of my most memorable: dennis leary, drinking a few pints with him as he sang "margaritaville" from the jukebox.

I live in an area where lots of famous people live "to get away from it." I have been to parties with Robin Williams, stood in line at the grocery next to Mare Winningham, served dinner to Bobby McFerrin, taught John Lasseter's step-son (Toy Story genius), and served JL at a school fundraiser. A good friend of mine is the nanny for an A-list actress that everyone here has heard of and drooled over. The Smothers Brothers and the Doobie brothers were clients of my father's. Every once in awhile I see Joe Montana at the movies, or out and about. Parts of American Grafitti were filmed on my street, one block up, and Tucker was filmed at the end of another street I lived on (there are McMansions there now, though. Those guys were wandering all over town. I ran into the Bridges a few times. They like it around here because they get treated fairly normally by the locals. They aren't here to hide, they are here to live normal lives, and for some reason, the culture of the wine country is conducive to that. For only a few of you, this will mean something, but one year in jazz band, we had Ed Shaugnessy come play with us. Another year, Maynard Fergussen came to play with a neighboring high school jazz band. My world civ teacher's brother is Tommy Newsom. Not bad for a girl who has never lived anywhere but dinky, agricultural Sonoma County. Shoshana

Even at 17 and 18, my mother would not let me roam the corridors at the assemblies alone. My mom was a sicko. She kept score of the guys who hit one me. And yes, it happened. I got two points if it was a guy with a ring. 3 points if he was carrying a baby....Creeped me out. I still need to confront my mom about this. I was always really hurt when she did this, and I never told her that. Shoshana
